CEREC Can Make Your Dental Visits Easier

Smiling blond woman wearing a striped shirtOur New York City sedation dentistry practice caters to patients who have a difficult time seeing the dentist. Oral care is integral to general health, wellness, and a strong sense of confidence in one’s smile. To help our patients take the best possible care of their teeth and gums, we have incorporated proven sedation techniques as well as innovative technology into our menu of services. Here, we discuss how CEREC restorations can make your dental visits easier.

On-Site Fabrication

Historically, it has taken at least two dental visits for a patient to receive a dental crown. This restoration is necessary to prevent further damage to a tooth that has been affected by a large cavity, fracture, or infection. First, the dentist would remove the damaged area and take somewhat messy impressions. Then, the tooth would be covered with a temporary crown. In a subsequent visit, the temporary crown would be removed, the tooth cleaned, and the final crown evaluated. Upon confirmation of optimal fit and appearance, the crown would finally be bonded to the tooth. CEREC has streamlined the process into a single visit.

CEREC crowns are made in the office utilizing CAD/CAM technology and an on-site milling machine. To create the model for the crown, the dental team takes digital impressions. This is ideal for anxious patients who have a strong gag reflex because it eliminates the need for the putty-like material traditionally used for impressions. Having digital impressions is similar to having pictures taken of the inside of the mouth. The camera is tiny and fits on the tip of a small wand-like instrument. This is inserted into the mouth and hovered over the tooth as it captures necessary images. The process is quick and simple.

CEREC and Sedation: A Winning Combo for the Anxious Patient

Dental anxiety can be debilitating. It is with this understanding the dental anesthesiologist Dr. Siegelman established our sedation dentistry office. Patients in need of restorative dental treatment can find a winning combo in CEREC plus sedation. Because the CEREC process is so conservative, patients often feel much more comfortable with sedation techniques like nitrous oxide (inhalation sedation). For more significant dental anxiety, the patient may choose to receive oral conscious sedation or intravenous sedation that puts them into a deeply relaxed state. In the case of oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, patients must arrange to have someone drive them home.
