Do You Know These Details about Invisalign?

When people are asked about what makes an attractive smile, they often use words like “bright” and “straight” in their description. These are attributes that don’t always come naturally. When teeth are crooked, there may be a certain perception about the person behind the smile. Because we tend to be innately aware of what creates an attractive smile, problems like gaps or overlapping teeth in our smile can affect our self-esteem. This doesn’t have to happen; nor does correction have to come from standard orthodontic treatment. In our New York City office, many patients can see the results they want through a course of Invisalign.
Invisalign has been available long enough for its primary benefits to be well-known. Patients often ask about this aligner system because they want to keep living a “normal” life; you know, one that doesn’t involve a metallic smile or having to brush around brackets and wires. There are significant advantages to Invisalign, and we are happy to provide this customized treatment. Here, we want to point out a few particulars that don’t get as much attention as all those fantastic benefits.
- Invisalign is not an accelerated system. There is a common misconception that teeth will move more quickly beneath the gentle pressure of aligner trays, but that isn’t the fact. In minor cases, aligners may need to be worn for less than a year. The same could be said of braces, though. More than a fast treatment, Invisalign is a discreet and comfortable treatment, and that is where we put our focus.
- Comfort is subjective. Every person has his pain tolerance level. It is important to remember that, regardless of method, teeth straightening moves teeth. Therefore, some patients may feel slight soreness now and then. Comfort is usually sustainable with over-the-counter pain-relieving medication as needed.
- Teeth may stain. There is always a risk that certain foods and beverages can stain teeth. Invisalign doesn’t change this. In fact, it is recommended that oral care is turned up a notch during Invisalign treatment. A quick swish of water over teeth after meals and snacks is sufficient to help minimize the risk of stains.
