What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of sedation methods to calm and ease patients who are faced with anxiety when visiting the dentist. Whether patients get nervous during a routine cleaning or are in need of extensive, complex dental work with hours in the chair, our team can assist with sedation methods to choose from.

What methods of effective sedation are available with Dr. Louis Siegelman?

Dr. Siegelman is a Board-Certified Dental Anesthesiologist and our practice is equipped to provide the following methods of sedation:

  • Nitrous oxide. This gas, also referred to by our patients as laughing gas, helps patients who are anxious to feel relaxed within just a few minutes. This type of sedation can be reversed by administering oxygen so patients can return to their workday or school day without interruption.
  • Oral conscious sedation. Oral conscious sedation is the use of a prescription pill before the appointment. Patients arrange transportation as they cannot drive while this medication is in their system. Patients can answer questions and follow directions but feel completely at ease. As the medication wears off, many patients do not have any memories of their appointment–but their necessary dental work is completed!
  • IV sedation. Patients requiring deeper sedation may ask about IV sedation, which is administered directly into the bloodstream to provide a deep state of relaxation. This is best for patients with severe dental anxieties who need more robust methods of sedation to get their dental work completed.
