Few things please us more than knowing our patients are taking steps to protect their dental health. Avoiding problems like gum inflammation and tooth decay is not only vital but also quite easy to do. How often do I need to see the dentist?
Dental checkups ideally take place every six months. When this schedule is maintained, there is far less opportunity for dental disease to develop. While the average situation calls for routine checkups and cleanings only, some circumstances may warrant additional visits. For instance, if sensitivity or pain occurs in between periodic checkups, an appointment should be scheduled to investigate the potential cause. We understand that people who feel anxious about seeing the dentist may shy away from any more visits than are absolutely necessary. This is why sedation is one of our primary services. Furthermore, we reassure patients that seeing the dentist at the earliest indication of a dental problem provides the best opportunity for conservative treatment.
Why might my teeth be sensitive and is there a way to prevent this?
Teeth may feel sensitive when the protective layer of enamel thins or gum tissue recedes from enamel. Sometimes, sensitivity indicates a cavity or the beginning stages of gum disease. If you experience tooth sensitivity, now is the time to see your dentist for a thorough checkup and conservative treatment, if needed.
To decrease tooth sensitivity, try:
- Using special toothpaste, such as Pronamel or Clinpro, for sensitive teeth. In addition to MiPaste after brushing.
- Avoid acidic foods like soda, red wine, and citrus fruit.
- Wait at least 20 minutes to brush after consuming acidic food or beverage.
- Change your brushing technique. Softer is better for your gums and enamel. Soft bristles, soft touch still gets the job done.
- Wear a nightguard. Bruxism, or grinding and clenching, can lead to sensitivity. Wearing a nightguard doesn’t stop this habit, but it protects teeth and their nerves from overstimulation.
